Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal treatments may be described as a series of services aimed at altering the supporting structures of the teeth for the purpose of improving health or aesthetics. Most commonly, this targets the diseased state of the periodontium, or the bones, ligaments, and tissues surrounding the teeth. The goal of these treatments is to provide a supportive environment for the teeth that looks harmonious to the smile and is free of disease-causing bacteria.

At MR Dental Aesthetics, our Beverly Hills, CA office offers numerous periodontal treatments to ensure the health and beauty of the smiles we serve. To learn more about these services, please read below!

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is the most common form of periodontal treatment and is often considered to be the first line of defense against periodontitis, or gum disease.

  • Scaling involves the removal of plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line.
  • Root planing is a deeper cleaning that smooths out the root surfaces to prevent bacteria from reattaching.

Osseous Surgery

Osseous surgery, or flap surgery, may be recommended in cases of more advanced periodontitis. This type of surgery involves lifting the gum tissue to access the underlying bone. The goal of this surgery is to remove any damaged tissue and smooth out the roots to prevent bacteria from returning.

Medicinal Therapy

In some cases, medicinal therapy may be recommended in addition to or instead of other periodontal treatments. This type of therapy involves the use of antibiotics or other medications to help fight infection and promote healing.

Soft Tissue Recession

In cases of soft tissue recession, or the exposure of the roots of the teeth due to gum loss, treatment may be necessary to protect the roots from damage and provide sufficient support to the teeth. This can be done through the use of soft tissue grafts, which involve taking tissue from another area of the mouth and attaching it to the recessed gum line.

Sinus Lift

Sinus lift surgery may be necessary in cases where the sinuses are too close to the teeth roots for dental implants to be placed; this may occur due to deterioration of the bone following tooth loss along the upper dental arch. This type of surgery involves lifting the sinus membrane and creating a space for the placement of bone graft material. This helps to create a more solid foundation for dental implants and encourages bone growth.

Extractions

In some cases, tooth extractions may be necessary. This is typically only done in cases where the teeth are too damaged to be saved. Extractions may be performed in the form of a simple extraction, which involves removing a visible tooth from the socket, or a surgical extraction, which involves making an incision in the gum tissue to access and remove a tooth.

Bone Grafts/Regeneration

Bone grafts may be necessary in cases where the bone surrounding the teeth has been damaged or has deteriorated as a result of tooth loss. After losing a tooth, the jawbone loses stimulation and begins to shrink—leaving a foundation that is unsuitable for dental implants. This type of surgery involves taking synthetic or natural bone material and placing it in the area of bone loss. This helps to promote new bone growth and provide support for the teeth or installation of implants.
